A Memphis Fast Forward Initiative

An Operation: Safe Community Update

Memphis is one of six cities participating in the National Forum on Youth Violence Prevention, a collaborative effort between the metropolitan areas and federal agencies to develop plans that aim to reduce violence, improve opportunities for youth and encourage innovation at the local and federal levels. As part of this ongoing initiative that was launched last year, federals officials from the Departments of Justice, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development and Labor met with Memphis and Shelby County officials in late August to discuss and implement a comprehensive anti-gang strategy.

Justice Department officials also reviewed the gang intervention strategies that are a part of the Memphis Youth Violence Prevention Plan, created by the leaders of Operation: Safe Community with input from over 800 stakeholders in Memphis and Shelby County. This plan is the foundation of Operation: Safe Community Phase 2 – 2012-2017.
