A Memphis Fast Forward Initiative

Memphis along with five other cities including Boston and Chicago, recently participated in the National Forum on Youth Violence.  The Forum, developed under the direction of President Obama, was hosted by the U.S. Departments of Justice and Education in Washington D.C. to encourage contributing cities to share challenges and promising strategies with each other and to explore how federal agencies can better support local efforts.

“We must come together to share knowledge and experience about what works, creating networks of local law enforcement agencies, educators, public health providers, community and faith-based organizations, parents and kids to stand together in the fight against youth and gang violence. This administration will continue to do what it takes to reclaim our communities and our youth from crime and violence. The lives of our nation’s children are at stake,” said Attorney General Eric Holder.

Participating in the forum from the city of Memphis included, Mayor A C Wharton and representatives from the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission spearheading Operation: Safe Community, Shelby County District Attorney General's Office, Memphis Police Department, Memphis City Schools, Shelby County Health Department, U.S. Attorney's Office-Western District of Tennessee, Memphis Tomorrow, and the University of Memphis Center for Community Criminology and Research.

“We recognize that in order to forge a comprehensive plan to effectively address youth violence in our community, we need to maintain a coordinated community approach. Fortunately through the development and implementation of Operation: Safe Community, community leaders, strategic partners and citizens are continually engaged in making Memphis safer,” said new Crime Commission Director Michelle Fowlkes.
